Wrecker’s Prayer

Intro: Many years ago, along rocky Northern coastlines, there lived some people who came to be known as wreckers. They acquired this name because of the peculiar way in which they eked out a meager living. They would build bonfires on the rugged shoreline , giving false signals to passing ships which would then crash onto the rocks, disgorging their precious cargoes. The wreckers had a convenient superstition that it was bad luck to save a drowning man, so there were seldom any survivors when they plied their macabre trade. By all accounts, the wreckers were very religious, and it was not uncommon for them to build their bonfires immediately after going to church….

I sit in this pew like I do every week
Sending my prayers up to you.
I hope that you’re listening to my humble pleas
“Cuz there’s five hungry children that I’ve got to feed

It’s been a tough season, and not just for me
The problem is common ‘round here
It’s a hard life we’ve chosen, this work that we do
But nothing can drown our devotion to You

So send us a tall ship from Holland
Send us a schooner from Spain
And when the mast breaks the horizon
We’ll sing out in praise to Your name
We’ll light up the fires as a beacon
And guide them to shore in the night
We’ll be ready and waiting to greet them
And deliver them into Your light
Please answer my prayer

The bounty You sent us last winter is gone
It lasted through Easter this year
It’s a shame that those poor sailors all lost their lives
Sometimes I think of their children & wives

But we did what we did, and we do what we do
‘Cuz You help those who help themselves
Bless us, O Lord, with Thy heavenly hands
Guide those with riches from faraway lands

Send us a tall ship from Holland
Send us a schooner from Spain
And when the mast breaks the horizon
We’ll sing out in praise to Your name
We’ll light up the fires as a beacon
And guide them to shore in the night
Well be ready and waiting to greet them
And deliver them into Your light
Please answer my prayer
Please answer my Prayer
